TALES FROM THE ROAD
By: Harlan (Hucky) Austin
My inspiration for this article came from Bob Seger’s song Turn the page.

A long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha.
You can listen to the engine moaning out its one lone song
you can think about woman, or the girl you knew the night before,
but your thoughts will soon be wandering, the way they always do.
When your riding sixteen hours and there’s nothing much to do
and you don’t feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through continue reading this entry »
I’VE GOT A BASKETBALL JONES
November 23, 2006 | 1:03 pm
Dave Chappelle (Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories) tells a funny story about playing basketball with Prince and Eddy Murphy. Well, I have my own court-side tale to share when it comes to “shirts vs. blouses.”
I used to play basketball with some of my boys from the hood. We’d get a few guys together to play every Wednesday night. These games were always a lot of fun, and could get pretty colorful in terms of smack-down talk. Prince caught wind of these games, and one day asked me “how come you never invite me to play?” He asked if he could join in on a game. I was surprised, but I knew that Prince liked to play basketball, in fact his brother Duane Nelson was an All-State basketball player (Prince’s lyrics “I wish I were handsome and tall like my brother” were truthful–Duane was a towering basketball star.)

TALES FROM THE ROAD
By: Harlan (Hucky) Austin
My buddy Mike Oakvik and I were working for Prince during the “Under The Cherry Moon” nation-wide publicity tour and film premiere. When you are employed as a bodyguard, one of the requirements for the job is that you stay in top physical condition. This meant in every city on the circuit we would seek out a gym to get in a workout. So when we hit Denver, Colorado we did what we usually did–tried to find a gym near the hotel–it was our usual routine. But this workout would prove to be one we would never forget.
Mazarati RIP

Ah, the glory days. I reminisce sometimes. I do. I was in my 20’s when Funk-Rock was in its infancy. Funkadelic started it all–a heavy guitar sound laid down on a funk foundation…then came the Minneapolis sound. Remember those days? Big hair and spandex. Singers in lingerie. The Family. Purple Rain the Movie. Purple Rain the Concert. Prince Mania. BrownMark. Sir Terry Casey. Mazarati. Wait.
Whatever happened to Mazarati? continue reading this entry »
The end for the Revolution
November 1, 2006 | 5:16 am

Stage Tokyo Japan 1986
Parade was Prince’s first proper European/Japanese tour. The setlist was a little different than the American shows. The show was seen by 120,000 people. On the Japanese leg Sheila E was the opening act. The city of Yokohama, Japan was one of the last cities that Prince and The Revolution would play together. They played 4 shows from September 5-9 in 1986.
It is said that they where very emotional shows and Prince even broke multiple strings during the performance of Purple Rain. To be honest, I don’t know about guitar strings snapping. My job wasn’t so much to watch the performance, but rather observe the crowd. Nobody in Prince’s entourage knew it was going to be the Revolution’s last concert. We were all so tired and ready to go home.
