In an attempt to make up for slow months at Minneapolis concert venue/nightspot ‘First Avenue’, there may now be billboards added to the exterior of the very club where Prince has played and ‘Purple Rain’ was filmed.

Are the owners of the club trying to bring Times Square to downtown Minneapolis? This dank and depressing eyesore of a building is what makes the Minneapolis music scene so great. The dingy black building across the street from the Target Center has been the downtown destination for concerts of up and comers, big ticket names and waning stars for over three decades and placing tacky billboards is morally wrong.

Prince timeline

City: Minneapolis MN

On this day in Prince history 22 years ago, Prince did a cameo appearance in his hometown of Minneapolis at the Sheila E show at First Avenue, where he played guitar on Too Sexy. After the Sheila E show Prince together with Brown Mark and Bobby Z perform a small set at First Avenue’s 7th Street entry.

The setlist included Africa Talks To You, Jam, Erotic City and Mutiny. This was also the night I got a ticket for driving Prince’s limousine without a chauffeur license

Wendy and Mike watching Sheila E do soundcheck at the Family Jam 2003. This was a great show I hope there’s another one soon. It was so nice to see everyone after so many years, it was like a high school reunion.

On a sunny day in June, 1958, Minneapolis saw the birth of just another black kid amongst a struggling community. Prince Rogers Nelson , in adult life, became a singer, songwriter, producer, record label owner, multi talented instrumentalist and a studio owner, not to mention one of the most exuberant, exciting and outstanding performers of the twentieth century.

His first UK release came in the form of a single called ‘I wanna be your lover.’ It entered the charts in January 1980 and failed to even make the top 40. This didn’t deter the young singer and dreamt of greater heights. In all honesty, this didn’t come along for another 4 years. Not until July 1984. continue reading this entry »
